Prayers for Everyday Life

Prayers

Words for the moments that matter: the morning, the meal, the long night, the hard season, and the quiet thanks. Pray them as written, or let them be a starting point for your own.

How to Pray

There is no wrong way to begin. Prayer is simply honest conversation. You do not need special words, a certain posture, or the right mood. You only need to show up as you are.

If it helps, try a simple rhythm: give thanks for something, ask for what you need, and sit quietly for a moment to listen. Speak out loud or in your heart. Use a prayer written below, or say plainly what is on your mind. A single sentence counts.

Prayer is a practice, not a performance. Start small, come back often, and let it grow with you.

The Lord's Prayer

Taught by Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 6. The traditional wording.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Morning Prayer

To begin the day with a settled and thankful heart.

Thank you for this new morning and the gift of another day. As the light returns, let it find me ready. Steady my steps, soften my words, and open my eyes to the people around me. Give me strength for the work ahead and grace for the things I cannot control. Let me carry kindness wherever I go today. Amen.

Grace: Prayer Before Meals

A simple blessing to share around the table.

For this food, for those who prepared it, and for the hands that provided it, we give thanks. Bless this meal and bless this table. Keep us mindful of those who go without, and make us generous in return. Amen.

Bedtime Prayer

A gentle, family-friendly prayer to close the day.

Thank you for today, for the good moments and the hard ones alike. Watch over everyone I love while we sleep. Quiet my worries, rest my body, and calm my mind. Let me wake up thankful and ready for tomorrow. Goodnight, and thank you. Amen.

Prayer of Gratitude

For the days when the heart is already full.

Thank you for more than I usually stop to notice: for breath and health, for family and friends, for a roof, for work, for small comforts and quiet joys. Thank you for the people who love me and the ones I get to love back. Keep my heart grateful, even on the ordinary days. Amen.

Prayer in Hard Times

For seasons of worry, loss, or uncertainty.

I am tired and I am worried, and I bring that honestly. Meet me in the middle of it. Give me the strength to face what is in front of me and the peace to release what I cannot carry. Send me people to lean on, and let me be honest enough to lean. Carry me through this, one day at a time. Amen.

Prayer for Healing

For yourself or for someone you love.

Bring healing to this body and comfort to this heart. Ease the pain, steady the fear, and grant rest to the weary. Guide the hands of doctors, nurses, and caregivers. Where there is healing to be found, help us find it, and where there is only waiting, give us patience and hope. Hold us close through it all. Amen.

Prayer for Protection

For safety over yourself, your home, and your loved ones.

Watch over the ones I love, near and far. Keep them safe on the roads, safe in their homes, and safe in their coming and going. Guard our hearts from fear and our steps from harm. Surround this home with peace, and let us rest knowing we are watched over. Amen.

Prayer for Our Nation

For unity, wisdom, and the good of our neighbors.

Bless this country and the people who call it home. Grant wisdom to those who lead and humility to those who serve. Heal our divisions and help us see one another as neighbors. Watch over all who protect and provide for us. Let justice, kindness, and freedom take root here, and make us a people worthy of the blessings we have received. Amen.

The Serenity Prayer

The well-known short version, attributed to Reinhold Niebuhr.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Amen.
