A Prayer for a Loved One

There's a particular kind of helplessness that comes with loving someone you can't fix things for, a child making hard choices, a parent getting older, a friend going through something you can't carry for them. This prayer is a way to hand that person to God by name, when watching from the outside is all you're able to do.

The Prayer

God, I bring you someone I love. You know them better than I do, every strength, every struggle, every part of their story I don't have access to. Watch over them today. Where they're afraid, give them courage. Where they're making decisions, give them wisdom. Where they're hurting, be close to them even in the moments I can't be. I can't fix what they're carrying and I can't make their choices for them, so I'm placing them in your hands instead of trying to control the outcome myself. Bless them, keep them, and let them know they're not facing this alone. Thank you for putting them in my life. Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this for someone going through a hard season you can't solve for them, before a big decision they're facing, or simply as a regular practice of covering the people you love in prayer. It works well as a daily habit, praying for one person by name, or as an urgent prayer in a specific moment of worry.

A Verse to Hold On To

Numbers 6:24-26

Yahweh bless you, and keep you. Yahweh make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. Yahweh lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.

Make It Your Own

Say this prayer with the person's actual name in place of someone. Pray it as a regular practice for the people closest to you, not only in moments of crisis. If letting go of the urge to fix their situation feels hard, that resistance is worth naming honestly in the prayer itself.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

Can I pray this for someone who doesn't know I'm praying for them?

Yes. Praying for someone doesn't require their knowledge or participation. Many people pray faithfully for years for a friend, a child, or an estranged family member who never finds out, and the prayer is no less real or meaningful for it. Love expressed in prayer doesn't need an audience to matter.

What if the person I'm praying for doesn't share my faith?

That's not a barrier to praying for them. This prayer is about your care for them and your trust in God on their behalf, not a requirement that they believe the same things you do. Keep praying for their wellbeing, their safety, and their peace regardless of where they stand.

Is it selfish to pray for my own family before praying for bigger world problems?

No. Caring well for the people closest to you isn't in competition with caring about the wider world, both matter. Prayer isn't a zero-sum list where one concern crowds out another. Pray for your loved ones by name, and let that be part of a fuller prayer life, not separate from it.
