Holy Week 2026: What Each Day From Palm Sunday to Easter Actually Means

Holy Week is the week before Easter and it is the most significant week in the Christian liturgical calendar. Each day commemorates a specific event in the final days of Jesus Christ's life, death, and resurrection. Understanding what each day marks helps the week become what it is meant to be: not a series of customs but a structured movement toward the central claim of the Christian faith.

Palm Sunday opens the week. This is the day that commemorates the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, riding on a donkey while crowds spread palm branches and cloaks on the road before him and shouted Hosanna. The scene is a moment of triumph that carries the shadow of what follows. The same city that welcomed him on Sunday would call for his crucifixion by Friday. Palm Sunday holds both things at once and asks the worshipper to hold them too.

Monday through Wednesday of Holy Week are called the Days of Teaching in many traditions. Jesus taught in the Temple, confronted the religious authorities, and prepared his disciples. Wednesday is sometimes called Spy Wednesday, commemorating the agreement between Judas and the chief priests to betray Jesus.

Holy Thursday is Maundy Thursday. The word maundy comes from the Latin mandatum, meaning commandment, which refers to the commandment Jesus gave at the Last Supper: love one another as I have loved you. Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper, the institution of the Eucharist, and Jesus's washing of the disciples' feet. Many churches hold a service in the evening that includes foot washing, a re-enactment of an act of profound humility by the one who came to serve rather than to be served.

Good Friday is the commemoration of the crucifixion. The name is not straightforward in any obvious sense. The most common explanation is that good here is an archaic usage meaning holy or sanctified. What is remembered on Good Friday is the death of Jesus on the cross, an execution by the Roman state at the insistence of religious leaders who considered him a threat. Many churches hold a service from noon to three in the afternoon, corresponding to the hours Jesus hung on the cross according to the Gospel accounts. It is a day of silence, of fasting, of contemplation.

Holy Saturday is the day of waiting. Jesus lies in the tomb. The disciples are scattered and afraid. The women who had followed him from Galilee watch to see where he is laid. It is the silence between death and resurrection.

Easter Sunday is the day that changes everything. He is not here; he has risen. That announcement, first made to the women who came to anoint the body at the empty tomb, is the center around which the entire Christian faith turns.
